Pool Fence Height Requirements in Massachusetts
How High Does Your Pool Safety Fence Need to Be?
A pool fence isn’t just about looks – it’s one of the most important safety measures you can put in place. At Colonial Fence, we combine decades of craftsmanship and familiarity with local codes to make sure our customers’ pool areas are secure, attractive and fully compliant. If you’re adding a new pool or upgrading your yard, understanding pool fence height requirements in Massachusetts is the first step to passing inspection.
The Massachusetts Minimum
State code requires a minimum fence height of 48 inches (4 feet), measured from the outside of the barrier on the side facing away from the pool. This ensures children can’t easily climb over. Other requirements include:
- The gap between the ground and the bottom of the fence must be 2 inches or less.
- Openings in the fence must be small enough to block a 4-inch sphere from passing through.
- Fencing must be designed so it can’t be easily climbed. This includes limits on horizontal rails and lattice openings.
- Chain link fencing must have mesh openings of 2.25 inches or less, or 1.75 inches or less if slats are installed. Openings are measured horizontally between parallel wires.

Gate and Access Requirements
Massachusetts also requires pool gates to be self-closing, self-latching and to swing away from the pool area. The latch release should be 54 inches above grade or mounted on the pool side to prevent small children from reaching it.
If you have an above-ground pool with walls at least 48 inches tall, the wall itself can serve as the barrier. However, any ladders, decks or steps must be protected with a compliant gate or fencing.
